Construction Update 05-10-19

Park District

This week, concrete and 2nd floor decking work were the focus of the mixed use building on the corner, along with preparations for a large transformer which will be installed on site soon.

On the hotel building, work has begun to install 72 auger cast piles. This will be the main thrust of the work for about 2 weeks.

Center City

This week, over 300 construction workers participated in activities related to National Safety Stand Down. The project has logged over 400,000 labor hours.

On the Grand River side, the installation of sidewalk and a decorative paver band is complete for the area adjacent to the project. Planter boxes will be placed in the near future. The exterior siding continues to make its way on all elevations as it nears completion in early June. Inside the building, painting has reached the top floor (12) with cabinets close behind (11). Target’s team is back installing fixtures in preparation for the store to be merchandised.

On Albert, the traffic coating of the surfaces in the structured parking garage are nearly complete on level 2. The masonry work is now largely complete. Installation of storefronts on the ground floor continues, with glass installation planned for the near future. In the apartments above, drywall has been installed up to the 9th floor with painting up to 7th floor. Outside, metal panels continue to make their way up all elevations. Curbs are being formed on the south side of Albert with concrete pours planned to occur over the coming days, weather permitting.

The project will continue to be very active next week, but work will be limited next Saturday in anticipation of thousands of people visiting for the Art Festival.

City staff is monitoring area roadways to ensure proper cleanup occurs, especially as weather changes can cause muddy conditions that need to be managed properly. The construction company also continues to examine the site to mitigate any impacts to the local community.

North Bound Abbot Road Closure, Monday May 13

On Monday, (05/13), weather permitting, asphalt will be placed in the road cut on Abbot Road. This work requires the closure of both lanes of northbound Abbot Road, between Grand River Avenue and Albert Avenue. The road will be closed at 7 a.m. and will re-open by 5 p.m. on 05/13. Pedestrian access to businesses will be maintained at all times. The alley at the west end of the 100/200 block of E. Grand River will closed to vehicular traffic. Vehicles headed northbound on Abbot Road will be detoured to M.A.C. Ave.

City staff has visited the businesses and property managers affected by this project to make arrangements for access and other items.

Consumers Energy Utility Work

Consumers Energy and Henkels & McCoy will complete the gas main work at the east end of the 100-200 block of E. Grand River Alley this evening (05/10). There will be final gas main tie ins that take place the week of 05/20. This work will be completed during hours that have minimal impact on businesses and residents.

The Hub @ East Lansing

Drywall at level 9 is working across the floor and should be complete mid next week with tapers and finishers right behind. Finishes continue at levels 3-6 and will be moving up as the drywall is completed on upper floors. Interior stud walls are complete on level 10 with MEP rough in nearly complete as well. Exterior masonry walls at podium level is nearly complete. Metal panels and masonry on the tower are ongoing. The roof is complete at the high main roof, with the lower roofs continuing as weather permits. Level 1 storefront is nearly complete meaning the tenant spaces will be dried in. Concrete placement will be winding down until June/July when the site concrete work takes place. Deliveries will continue to increase, as Electrical, Mechanical, and Fire Suppression trades continue roughing in and the finish trades begin the fit out at first floor, mezzanine, and working their way up the building.

The contractor continues to monitor the site for safety and implement additional traffic control techniques as necessary based on delivery volumes.
