Downtown Construction Update 6-29-18

Center City

The Albert street underground utility and sidewalk replacement portion of the project is wrapping up next week. Weather permitting, the contractor will begin paving on Albert Ave. within the project site on Saturday, (06/30). On Monday, (07/02), Abbot Road will be closed between Grand River Ave. and Albert Ave. in order for road paving to take place. The closure is expected to take place at 7am and last into the evening. Vehicles traveling southbound on Abbot will be able to turn west onto Albert Ave., during the road closure. Once the paving is complete Albert Ave. will be re-opened to allow traffic to travel west up to Abbot Road.

On the Albert building, work continues to focus on the installation of the elevated decks. Pour #4 was completed this week, with pour #5 planned for early next week.

On the Grand River side, the building continues its vertical ascent as new cold-form panels are placed by the tower crane and crew. The contractor is planning underground utility work on the south side of the building beginning late next week. This work is expected to begin on July 5th and will require two of the three lanes of Grand River (westbound) to be closed to traffic for approximately 1 month. The contractor is working with MDOT and a transportation company to ensure the lane closures meet state requirements.

The Hub @ East Lansing

Foundation work continues to be the most important task at hand. Unexpected underground conditions have added work to the job. The interior slab on grade from the West side to the H-line has been poured and the contractor plans on pouring slab on grade from the H-line to the G-line on Friday (6/29) weather permitting. The contractor has started to frame the first floor deck on the west side of the site and the first floor deck pour is anticipated to take place the week of 07/02). The contractor is finishing up footings and foundation walls and plans to keep moving with more slab on grade and slab on grade pours.

An increase in truck traffic continues to be expected as more materials and equipment make their way on site. The contractor continues to monitor the site for safety and implement additional traffic control techniques as necessary. The contractor has access to the alley south of the site, allowing easy access for trucks, equipment and materials. The contractor is working with neighbors on a plan to accommodate access and parking. The plan to install a crosswalk across Bogue St. on the south of the site, is still being developed.

Parking Garage Repairs

Work continues through the downtown Public Parking Garages with concrete and water-proofing repairs. On Friday (06/29) there will be a concrete pour to fill the majority of patches in the Division Street Parking Garage. The contractor is anticipating beginning the repair work in the Charles Street Parking garage, in two weeks. The contractor will do some minor concrete patching, along with interior and exterior sealant replacements. This work will impact a minimal number of parking spaces in the garage, along with some traffic shifts. Later in July, the work will transition to deck-coating in areas of the Charles, Division and Grove Parking Garages. Barricading and signage will be in place to help with pedestrian and traffic flow.

Sidewalk Repairs

Sidewalk repairs began earlier this week at the Albert/Division intersection. It is anticipated this intersection will be completed by July 10, 2018. The sidewalk repairs will then continue to the Albert/Bailey and Albert/Collingwood intersections. There will be vehicle and pedestrian detours.
