Downtown Construction Update 6-15-18

Center City

The Contractor has submitted an extended hours request for one day either Tuesday, (06/19) or Wednesday (06/20) to complete the existing water main cut and cap at the intersection of Abbot Road and Albert Ave. This work requires the closure of Abbot Road from Grand River to Albert Avenue, which is expected to occur during the nighttime hours from 7pm to 7am. Vehicles headed southbound on Abbot will be detoured to Oakhill Avenue.

The Contractor is anticipating the new water service connections will take place on Monday, (06/18) or Tuesday, (06/19) for Menna’s Joint, Black Cat Bistro and Harper’s. This work will be scheduled in order to have the least amount of impact on each business. City staff and representatives from the project will be visiting businesses in the affected area to discuss the plan and coordinate connections. Due to unforeseen site conditions and utility obstacles, Albert Ave., between Grove St. and Abbot Rd., is now anticipated to reopen by 06/30.

On the Albert Ave. building, an elevated deck pour is scheduled for Friday, (06/22). The concrete pour will take place during normal construction hours.

Progress continues on the Grand River Ave. building, with a large concrete pour completed on Tuesday, (06/12). Over the next several weeks there will be an increase in truck traffic as building materials are delivered to the site, as the project continues to progress. The contractor will begin the installation of brick veneer on the Grand River Ave. building on Monday, (06/18).

The Hub @ East Lansing

Foundation work continues to take center stage at the Hub project, as some unexpected underground conditions have added some work to the job. The interior slab on grade is in progress with slab on grade pours beginning next week (06/18), moving west to east. Both the southern and northern walls of the project are in the process of being poured and should be wrapped up soon. The contractor plans to start framing the first floor deck early next week. An increase in truck traffic continues to be expected as more materials and equipment make their way on site. The contractor continues to monitor the site for safety and implements additional traffic control techniques as necessary.

In order to better access the site, a plan is being developed to close the alley on the south side of the site. If approved, this closure would take place in July and last for the remainder of the project period. The contractor is working with neighbors on a plan to accommodate access and parking.

Parking Garage Repairs

The Grove Street Parking Garage repairs have been completed. The contractor began working on the concrete and joint repairs in the Division Street Parking Garage and once completed, will continue on to the Charles Street Parking Garage. During the parking structure repairs, patrons can expect some parking spaces to be unavailable for periods of time as the workers make their way throughout the garages. Signs and proper barricading will be placed in the facilities where the work is taking place.
