Downtown Construction Update 5-4-18

Center City

Progress has continued this week, as the project continues to go vertical. Work has commenced on the third story as preparations are underway for the next concrete pour on the elevated deck. Concrete is the main focus of work within the project site, with several pours being planned over the coming weeks in coordination with our spring weather. Some early morning starts and/or late evening finishes are expected for the larger pours.

The construction site is expected to expand into Albert Ave starting Monday, May 7, 2018, for underground utility/ public infrastructure work. As noted previously, this work will involve a closure of vehicular traffic on Albert between the west side of Grove Street to Abbot Road for about six weeks while the underground public utilities are updated, new sidewalks are installed, and the roadway and walkways are resurfaced/ replaced. Pedestrian and business access will be maintained as the work takes place. A closure map is available at:

As dry weather and high winds can create a dusty situation, the contractor continues to employ misting and other strategies to mitigate dust. This condition is expected to improve as spring rains come, and as more concrete is poured on the site.

Parking Facility Repairs

Also, beginning Monday, May 7, 2018, some restoration work will begin in Grove Street, Charles Street, and Division Street garages. The work will progress in that order as the contractor completes its work. During this work, patrons can expect some parking spaces to be unavailable for periods of time as the workers make their way throughout the garages. Signs and proper barricading will be placed in the facilities where the work is taking place.

The Hub @ East Lansing

Beginning Monday, night work is anticipated as a large tower crane is installed on the site. This work will involve the closure of two eastbound lanes of Grand River Avenue during the nighttime hours beginning Monday night (5/7), and is expected to take place nightly through Thursday (5/10). This closure was approved by MDOT in order to ensure the safe delivery and installation the materials for the tower crane. Eastbound traffic will be able to continue through the turning lane through their approved traffic containment plan.

Besides the crane construction, footings and steel are the main focus for the project currently, as the construction team prepares to bring the site vertical. The covered walkway has been completed and is now illuminated to ensure pedestrian access is maintained as the project continues.
